24 Episode 16–9:00p.m.-10:00p.m.

by Aaron

Does everyone remember the “bizarro world episode of Seinfeld? Well, I would like to welcome everyone to the “bizarro world of 24.

This episode was completely bonkers, and quite a nice change from the formulaic rut that this season was getting into.

First of all, I think Wayne Palmer has gone mad on adrenaline. He wakes up from his coma, he stops the nuclear strike, Vice President Boothe threatens to take away his presidency by invoking the 25th amendment, Tom Lennox helps President Wayne by blackmailing Vice President Boothe, President Wayne wants more and more adrenaline, and then he’s all of a sudden launching the same nukes. I did not see that coming. Apparently President Wayne was just getting a bit of missile envy, and wanted to launch the nukes himself.

More bizarro stuff happened when Rick “Mikey Doyle Schroder told Nadia to get information on Milo because he screwed up, she got the information and then Doyle destroyed it.

You think that’s the end of the bizarro things? Think again. Gredenko went to meet Fayed with a tracker implanted in his arm. Gredenko tipped off Fayed that CTU was there, and freely gave up his arm to be cut off. After that Fayed was done in by a bunch of hillbillies in a bar, oh sweet irony.

I really liked this episode. Right when we all thought 24 was headed down the same exact direction as it has gone before, they throw this episode at us and show us that 24 still has what it takes to make things exciting.

There are only 8 episodes left, and now I’m left wondering what in the world is going to happen in just 8 hours. With President Wayne gone mad, Fayed in custody, Gredenko lying on the beach with his arm cut off, Tom and Karen calling a truce, Nadia and Milo getting hot and heavy, Doyle actually looking out for other people, and Bill still recapping like crazy, there’s just no telling where 24 can go from here.

BRAVO! 24, BRAVO! Thanks for showing us all that 24 still is one of the most innovative shows on TV.

Best Quote of the Episode:
Jack Bauer “Just show me your head.”

I liked the 2 minutes that Jack Bauer was in it, but other than that I thought this episode was rather pointless. We are right back to where we started. Wayne is back in control, but weak and engaging the US in a nuclear war, right where VP Powers had us an hour ago. And Ricky accused Milo and then covered for him. And where was Chloe?! Was she even in it? I don’t mind moving on to other storylines, but I think Milo and Nadia are kind of spare, I could do without so much of them. Hopefully the next episode will be better, I was not into this one at all.

  2. JoNikr Says:

Just show me your head. Incredible, I notice it on the moment and tell myself sure a +6 for this one.

  3. Loren Says:

I was impressed with this episode as well. I was lured into the complacency of another formulaic episode when BAM! out of nowhere we’re hit with one unpredictable act after another. Gredenko’s arm - man, that was sick, and Pres. Palmer - he was supposed to save the country, not start a war he was raised from the dead to stop!
I am so excited for next week’s episode, though- looks action packed and very 24-esque. Can’t wait.

  4. Dr Milkdad Says:

Wow, I totally disagree, this episode makes me think, THIS is the point where the 24 writers are out of ideas. I was obviously shocked when Wayne decided to shoot the nuke off, but in a, WTF that’s the lamest twist 24 has seen kind of way. How many episodes were focused on this being stopped? Wasn’t it only 1 hour ago that Wayne stopped the nuke from going off? Then what? “Okay, I need some adrenaline please, thanks! Okay, now that I’m an adrenaline junkie, let’s bomb some innocent people! I love World War III!”
Then there was the way Fayed was finally caught…”Hey there he is! That’s the terrorist!”…”Well hot damn, it is! Let’s get him boys!”..And then Gredenko wanders off and dies somewhere….Bravo!..You’d think someone would be suspicious of the Russian with a fountain of blood for an arm…but I’d be wrong…

  5. Aaron Says:

    Dr. Milkdad,
I think I’m thinking back to when Wayne wanted to bomb Assad without listening to Jack. Maybe Wayne is going back to his old ways.

But, I can see why some people would have a problem with this episode.

For me it was just something new. It seemed, in my mind, that 24 was trying to bring us in another direction.

But, one thing’s for sure. If they don’t bring Jack into it more, this episode will all be for not with me. Because Jack is progressively taking a back seat here, and that’s not good.

Thanks for your comment Dr. Milkdad.

  6. Marc Says:

I think I just figured out why Wayne is going nuts right now. He still thinks Assad tried to kill him, and he’s so mad that he was about to help Assad before that bomb went off that he’s in retaliation mode. I think we’re going to need to see Tom own up to what happened concerning Assad and the bomb before Wayne calls off this strike.

  7. Ziggy Says:

Hahaha, when Jack said that line I was like “Uh oh” and then the guy popped his head out and then BANG and he was history.

[random]As much as I love 24, I definitely enjoy watching a whole season on DVD in a few days rather than waiting a week to watch a new episode.[/random]

  8. Scott Says:

My favorite line was probably “SHUT UP!” as Jack kicked Fayed in the face. It was just so… Jack. My roommate and I both went, “Ohhooo YEA!” and started cackling maniacally.

  9. Kim Says:

Pardon my invasion of the comment section here, I’m testing what happens if I add my own white space into a comment.

I just added a blank line above this one and want to test to see if it shows up when I submit the comment.

  10. Kim Says:

    Ta Da! It worked!

  11. Kim Says:

My name is Kim and I’m stupid :D

  12. Kim Says:

No, my name is Kim, and I rock! Party on dude.

So does this whitespace thing work then or not…

I hope so as it’s very annoying :P

  13. DaveP Says:

Just testing to see if the whitespace fix works.

I double clicked so let’s see.

  14. chrispian Says:

Following up with the testing. This is a test of the emergency comment system. If this was a real emergency instructions would follow:

Looks like it’s working. But only if you double return, which is a given.

  15. Wayne Says:

Prediction: the bomb’s a dud. Or a ploy.

And remember when Fyed said to his henchman “are you concerned for me? Or just want to take my place?” Total forshadowing of that taking over and becoming even more evil than Fyed.

Worst moment of the episode? The gawd awful dialogue between Bill and Karen.

  16. Karen M. Lynch Says:

I’m with ‘the other Aaron,’ in that the only part I really liked in this episode was when Jack was in it for all of two minutes.

And like Scott, when he kicked Fayed in the head.

Do they not know that this show is ‘all about Jack?’ and how he saves the world and without him doing that, who cares?

  17. Kevm Says:

Prediction: bomb goees off, the world erupts into war, jack gets shot at the end of the next episode and dies, jack wakes up in 2 weeks in a chinese prison camp and the whole first 17 episode of the season were nothing but a dream and a waste of time. I will stop watching the show

  18. Bailey Says:

Funny how in the first few episodes I hated Tom and liked Wayne and now it’s the other way around. I definitely think it had something to do with the steroids.

I also wonder if there’s something up with Doyle. It doesn’t seem right that he should all of a sudden be that nice. And there hasn’t been a traitor yet this season…

  19. Lucas Says:

I think that one the greatest moments that testifies that Jack is the uber-BAMF is when he said, “Show me your head.” Awesome!

I also can’t believe that Wayne/Gary Payton has launched the nuke. I agree with Marc that Tom needs to own up to what he did, even if it means losing his job and possible being convicted of perjury or something else. If Wayne is launching under the assumption that Assad was responsible then he will be wrong….dead wrong.

Prediction: Wayne Palmer suffers a heart attack because of vascular damage done by the adrenaline. Then the VP will be back in charge. Scary!

  20. the other aaron Says:

That was a good line when Jack kicked Fayed in the head. Good point Marc, maybe Palmer does thing Assad tried to kill him. During next week’s preview I thought, maybe the nuke is a dud and Palmer’s bluffing. But I don’t think thats true.

  21. nicole Says:

Personally I found this episode boring and couldn’t wait to get through it. I am not into this season at all. The previews show Jack getting shot next week. *Yawn* Please. He’s got a bullet-proof vest on. Besides, even if they were to kill him off, I honestly don’t care anymore. He’s barely in the episodes anyway. Sorry for all the negativity. I am just so disappointed in this season; it’s such a letdown.

  23. Kim Says:

Yes, Jack is almost gone from the show, the “romantic” tension at CTU is beyond boring, but I was surprised at the go-ahead for the nuke strike at the end. It’s not too predictable yet, but definitly slowing down.

  24. simba Says:

Theres a fine line between a well planned and executed plot twist which nobody saw coming and just doing something senseless for the heck of it. 24 has lost its original charm… Lets face it, it thrived on shock value and pushing the envelope but now after doing everything that could conceivably be done they have simply run out of ideas. Every season till now has redefined the series and pushed it further, this season fell flat after episode 4. And the continuity is crap this season, does anyone on the writing staff even remember that jack was supposedly under emotional strain and has talked in two years? they’ve completely lost the real time linkage between episodes… I’m surprised you fell for such cheap tricks on the part of the writers, heroes has loopholes and at least one dues ex machina i have spotted but they still have a far better writing team and theres hardly a reason to keep watching 24 when heroes comes back

  25. Frank Bernard Says:

Even though Jack kicks…head (twice if you count the head shot) the episode’s final surprise plot twist–Wayne’s high blood pressure, adrenaline rush, 180-degree insanity–is still the worst in 24’s history. I hope this is not a sign of cliff hangers to come. Shock and awe will be stock and awful.

  26. steve Says:

Have to agree with the last commenter - the end of last night’s episode was a clear indication the writers are completely out of ideas. It was one of the dumbest plot twists I’ve seen anywhere. Apart from the implausibility of injury or adrenaline-induced insanity, Wayne knew that Assad tried to save him! He’s going to nuke Assad’s home country out of gratitude?

  28. Adam Says:

This is the most ridiculous blog I have ever seen. This is obviously written by a person who is not a true fan and doesn’t know a thing about good tv shows. I am so frustrated by this last episode that it makes me want to stop watching altogether, but I have to finish it off cause I have been watching from day 1. It seems as each episode is passing by the plot gets more insane! The writers have turned into Lost writers and have no idea where they are going with this. Kiefer must be kicking himself to have signed on for this season, its a wreck.

Everything in this episode has gone crazy. Starting from when Jack’s family is related into the plotline and his dad killing his son, and now the president has done a complete 360. To me this shows horrible charater development. I thought to myself who would watch such a show if its this bad…and the guy who wrote this blog dissapoints me by letting me know there are idiots out there who don’t give a lick for good old fashioned 24. I wish I could make Kiefer read this cause he needs to get back on track. Seasons 1-4 were brilliant! Its definatly losing touch. Come back 24!

  29. Doodool Tala Says:

    Hey ADAM,

If the president did a ‘360′, he’d end up right where he began…you JACKASS. Don’t you mean he did a 180?

    Smart guy.

PS: It’s spelled DEFINITELY and not DEFINATLY

  30. deneb Says:

I missed the preview of next week’s episode (april 9). How can I view it? where do I go?

  31. scoggy Says:

    deneb

Search for 24 promo on YouTube and sort by date uploaded. Adding 6×17 to the search may help.

That episode was weird. I suspect Palmer will use the missile attack as a threat and divert them at the last minute.

So I guess Fayed’s little helpers will now be the baddies, trying to set off the remaining bombs in populated areas. Very odd that they’ve got rid of the two big bads in episode 16.

  32. 24-tunate... Says:

Okay… Everyone seems to be taking issue with President Wayne, but he’s not all that whacked here, IMO. Did you notice NONE of the joint chiefs sided with him? That’s crap… unless we are to believe they are power-hungry maniacs, which they well could be. ;) I think when Wayne saw that it set him off and forced him down this path. I’m willing to see where that goes.

My issue is with Gredenko… his actions just made no sense: show Fayed the wire, let his arm get cut off, have Fayed help him out of there, and then sacrifice Fayed to the bar-flies. THEN, he wanders off under a pier to die like some wounded animal? Where was he going? As much blood as he was losing, he had to know he couldn’t go far. And how was he getting (where)? A hidden raft under the pier? CTU brought him there… was he deluded enough to think he could wrest their vehicle from them without a weapon and without… well, his arm??!? His actions were insane; if he was going to do that, tell Fayed he was compromised and have him end it with a merciful head shot.

Lastly: bravo Tom Lennox! Finally, the “Biscuit” moves in the right direction!

  33. Artadius Says:

Apologies if someone else has posted this…but I didn’t take all the time to read all the previous comments…

What if President Palmer is launching these nukes for the sole purpose of ‘clean’ detonating them (perhaps over the water or somesuch) in order to prevent any nuclear fallout from debris? Doing so (and, as a result, expending the sub’s possibly limited nuclear arsenal) would give Bauer and Co. some precious few hours to find and disable the remaining two suitcase nukes before the VP resumes his real attacks (as defacto Pres.) if and when Palmer finally passes out again from his injuries.

  34. Justice~! Says:

Come *ON*. *NO ONE* thinks that Palmer is firing off some sort of dummy missile so that he can get VP Daniels aligned with him while still preserving innocent lives?

I am predicting next week’s plot twist as “Oh, it was just a dummy missile after all”. I want some 24 energy gum if I am right, blog author!!

(BTW, it would be cool if this blog actually remembered everything you typed if you forgot to type in your E-mail address and hit submit…)

  35. Mark H Says:

So I don’t see your comments on the last words of the episode. The president needs to see the doctor. I think he is tanking on all the drugs.

  36. Dr. Phill Says:

I think everything was great except the ending where Palmer launched the nuclear bombs, that was stupid and shows the writers are out of idea’s. This season sucks in comparison to others.

This episode seems to have drawn a lot of reactions. Some love it, some hate it. I’m in the former group. I think this could be the episode where 24 turned the corner on what has been a sub-par season. The first 30 minutes were a snorefest, but the last half was classic 24. I did not see the Wayne Palmer twist coming, and, although it had me scratching my head, I’m pretty confident that the writers will make it pay off next week. Still wish we could find out what happened to Charles Logan, though.

  39. matt jackman Says:

I have to go with the… hated it side on this episode. It just seems so pointless, other than to contradict itself. It seems like the writers only care about is making you think one thing is going to happen, and then having the opposite thing happen. You think doyle is going to turn myloe in… nope. you think the president is going to stop the nuclear strike… nope. you think gradenco is going to escape with fayed… nope. Really what did cutting off his arm acomplish besides making him die on the beach, and getting fayed captured. Ya not my favorite episode, not to mention jack was in about five minutes of it.

  40. mike navarro Says:

i don’t believe that doyle can be all friendly suddenly..he is probably the one aiding the bad guys..

  41. KongKnabe Says:

“I did not see that coming”

Well, when you suddenly have the caracters do completely irrational things it’s pretty hard to predict! - Never mind a coherent plot line.. What’s next? - Jack Bauers is acctually working for the teorist and has been all along in the previos seasons? - President Palmer anounces that he was bourn as a girl? Or maby Titus Pullov from the series “Rome” steps in and saves the day? - Would make about as much sense as this episode ;-)

  42. Yvan Says:

Well, gredenko coming up with some kind of attempt to escape was important; he had to know that Jack would not allow him to escape, and Fayed was expecting to recieve information about a new target.

As a result, Gredenko needed to come up with a scheme where he could escape from both Fayed and CTU because either would simply kill him when his usefullness expired.
