24 Season 6 Premiere (Episodes 1 & 2)
Since this was a 2 hour premiere I think I’ll still split up the reviews according to the actual episode. So, I’ll just put up both my reviews for both episodes, today and tomorrow. Then we’ll start having one review a week.
Also, after each episode I will also be posting the 24 Character Countdown, where I will award and deduct points based on character performances throughout the show.
6:00 a.m.-7:00 a.m.
(S06 E01)
Well, where do I start, it was an intense first hour to say the least. America is suffering from suicide bomb attacks, Peter MacNicols wants to intern all the people who pray towards Mecca, President Wayne Palmer seems a bit spineless, and Jack has grown a sweet Charles Manson-esque beard while on his vacation (imprisonment) in China.
We’re informed that Pres. Palmer has brokered a deal with the Chinese to get Jack back. The specifics of how they got Jack back were left out although the term “high price? was used a great deal. I think it was better that way, we know it took a lot to get Jack back, and we weren’t bothered with the details.
Well, the inter-office politics, backstabbing, and whining are back in full swing as Milo and Morris duke it out. Morris has that wonderful, and by wonderful I mean absolutely annoying, stinging British sarcasm a la Simon Cowell. Already after the first episode I’m a bit tired of hearing those two bicker like little school girls.
Chloe managed to pull off her first scowl of the season in about 3 seconds after she was shown on screen. Her and Morris also managed to almost completely botch the ongoing operation of getting Assad by using Morris’s personal satellite (I wish I had something like that).
I loved the first episode though. I thought it was well done, and everything we expect from 24. Seeing Jack again was like a breath of fresh air, even though he seems like he’s gone through quite a lot with all the scars on his back. Jack’s been brought back to the U.S. for one purpose, to die. A man inside Assad’s crew has offered to give up Assad in exchange that he gets to kill Bauer. Jack knows what is expected of him and he gives a stirring speech to Bill about how he can “die for something,? instead of “dying for nothing.?
Then the tables turned are once Fayed (the man who wants to kill Jack because Jack killed his brother) confesses to Jack that he is actually the one that’s behind the bombings, that Assad has come to the U.S. to stop him, and that CTU is actually going to end up killing the wrong man.
That’s the wrong thing to tell Jack right? Yup. Because when everyone leaves the room Jack makes his move, initiating his first kill of the season by biting a man’s neck (yes exactly like a vampire) and ripping out a huge chunk of flesh (it seems that Kiefer hasn’t forgotten his Lost Boy roots). Now Jack has escaped. Terrorists beware, Jack DOES bite!
Episode 2 after the jump…
7:00 a.m.—8:00 a.m.
(S06 E02)
Now that Jack’s escaped, he’s running through the sewer drains to freedom. Fayed was hot on
his trail, but elected to give up the search and continue on with his mission. If only he’d looked just around that corner. Jack catches quite a few breaks.
I love how Jack found an car in a garage, that actually had a cell phone in it. Not only was that cell phone amazingly new, but it also had GPS on it. How lucky!
Now that Jack’s out and about, it’s time to cue the part where everyone questions Jack’s information. Haven’t they figured out by now that Jack is always right, ALWAYS! But, with Tomas Lennox (Peter MacNicol) trying to run the show behind the President’s back, things are going to get a lot uglier.
It’s interesting that in this season the President and his staff are actually located in Washington. We’ve got a whole new set of problems now. Lennox still wants to intern all the Middle Eastern people and now we’ve been introduced to Wayne’s sister played by Regina King who is an Islamic Activist/Lawyer.
I couldn’t believe she deleted those files. What did she think would happen after she deleted them when the FBI had an actual warrant? I can see this shaping up to be something that really weighs on Wayne’s mind throughout the entire season. It seems that she expects preferential treatment because her brother is the President.
So, after no one listened to Jack about Fayed Jack has no choice but to rescue Assad from the air strike. The house blowing up seemed to be the biggest explosion we’ve seen on 24. That was pretty spectacular.
The best scene of episode was when we as an audience found out that Jack may not be up to the task after all. There is a war going on in his head, and after he gave up torturing one of Assad’s men who was actually working for Fayed, we know that all is not right in Jack world. Jack’s 20 months in Chinese prison camp have really taken their toll on his mind, and body. Even Assad was amazed by the scars on Jack’s back. But, it seems that Jack has become an even more complex character than what he already was.
On the other hand, the scene in the subway where Jack and the suicide bomber are fighting you realize that deep down this is what Jack does. He’ll never lose his instincts. Kicking that guy off the subway was one of the coolest action sequences to ever happen in 24.
So, already two hours down and by way of 24 experience, we all know that we haven’t even scratched the surface of what’s expected later on during the season. It’s going to be a wild ride.
Please leave your predictions, thoughts, and all that good stuff in the comments.

I love 24! Been watching from the beginning. I think that he got the phone from the guy he “bit”! I was wondering where it came from???
I need to know what’s going to happen tonight! Sounds like some family members are going to show up? Dad, Kimberly, Audrey(baby)??? I’d like to see Chase come back. I liked his character. I think that Curtis is on his way out and Schroeder will replace him. Someone goods got to die tonight. They always do!

Right when Jack kicked the bomber off the metro train I yell out “TAKE THAT TERRORISM”
I’m glad Jack is back I only got into 24 last season but I’m really enjoying having it back on TV my only beef is that American Idol is replacing House this week WTF????

i had the priviledge of seeing the explosive 4 hour premiere a week early and all i’m gonna say is that no… no Audrey just yet. Jack (sans trademark bag - must be in China) is still busy trying to nab the bad guys. Tonight is gonna have you thinking … and thinking… and thinking….

I thought the premier was awesome. However, about that phone thing, when Jack found the very new, very high tech phone, I don’t think he found it in the car, especially because the car is old and junky. It is far more likely that he picked the phone off the guy he killed. A suicide bomber would be much more likely to have a phone with GPS.

Hey,
Thanks for stopping by everyone. And thanks for the info about the phone. I’m going to have to watch the first episode again to find out where he got that phone.
Aaron.

No Spoilers please. Thanks.

I just watched it again and the phone is in a charger inside the car. The fact it’s there doesn’t really bother me, especially since it’s GPS enabled. I leave my cell in the car all the time and if I also used it for GPS I might just leave it there more often than not given it’s not my only phone. No what bothered me was Wayne Palmer. He’s just not Presidential in the least. I’m surprised people voted for him ala..RFK/JFK when I’m really not sure what the heck he’s done other than work with David Palmer. Anyway, regardless, I too was surprised to see the Oval office. Maybe they got the old West Wing sets!
So far it’s cool…I’m sure it will be a fun ride.

First off, he did get the phone in the car. It was in the holster on the dashboard. Come on, pay attention to details. Also, Jack was in China for 2 years. Remember the dialogue with the Chinese dude right when he got off the plane? He said that Jack hadn’t spoken a word to them…IN OVER TWO YEARS. Not 20 months, sorry.
kthxbye.

The phone was in a holder plugged into the dash on the car when he got in it.

Here’s a plot hole for you:
When Buchanan and Curtis take Jack to the drop point, he handcuffs Jack to a steel grate. Then they leave and the terrorists arrive. One of them uses a key to unlock Jack’s cuffs.
WHERE THE HELL DID THAT KEY COME FROM!?
January 15th, 2007 at 12:23 pm
Mike,
LOL I know. But, I think it’s a given assumption in movies and TV that all handcuff keys are universal.

GPS on many phones is probably not too far off, considering the show now takes place several years into the future, if I’m not mistaken (Quickly adding everything up from the Wiki article, minus 1 year from each season to account for the year gap between seasons, gives me a total of 4 years in the future).

I got so used to Jack having a multi-tasking cell phone I didn’t think where it came from - I guess the new series came too soon for it to be an iPhone.
Have to agree that Wayne - as much as I like him - is not his brother when it comes to presidential qualities. I guess he got the sympathy vote. Besides, I can’t shake of his resemblance to Dave Chapelle - I keep expecting him to say “I’m Rick James, bitch!”

forget the phone, the suicide bomber on the train boarded near the middle, yet gets booted out the back - jack may have kicked ass, but it was the editor that saved that train.

I just found this 24 podcast called ‘Bauer Hour’. the guys hosting is are actually pretty funny. http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/tscmd/tc/13214

the bite…that was gross…but oh so good
January 15th, 2007 at 4:17 pm
About that vampire bite - I have 3 words tosay about that. Ugh ugh ugh. BUT - it was totally unexpected by me so I deem that action pretty spectacular (although I had to turn my head at the actual bite. Gross!)
Is it just me who thinks the show is going to rachet up the violence quota?
poeticjustice

looks like Jack may be “doing more with less” this season - may see some more of his inherent ingenuity.
