Character Countdown, Episode 8

by

Good morning, everyone! It’s time to see, once again, how some of our favorites did this week. Enjoy!! Thanks, once again, to Aaron.

Jack Bauer (251)

-Reminding them that bad guys don’t play by rules +20
-Getting Vossler to admit where the First Gentleman is +18
-Rocking the man purse + 15
-”With all due respect, Madam President, ask around” +20

Gain/Loss: +73
New Total: 324

Bill Buchanan (147)

-Planning the decoy operation +17
-Letting Jack take over his group +10 (After all, Jack always knows best)

Gain/Loss: +27
New Total: 174

President Taylor (28)

-Not backing down (as I expected) when her own husband is on the line, realizing how unfair that would be +20
-Questioning Jack’s loyalties +2 (because while it is smart to question someone who has participated in a kidnaping, it’s Jack. Everyone should know by now he’s on the country’s side.)
-Saying ‘you wouldn’t dare’ to a mass murdering crazy guy. -10

Gain/Loss: +12
New Total: 40

Renee Walker (190)

-Insisting on involving Moss -10 (You know this won’t lead anywhere good)
-Going along with Jack’s plan +15
-Not going too far with the Vosslers +10
-Showing sympathy and pity when she realizes that Mr. Vossler is dead +12
-Not telling Larry right off not to say her name while on the phone -16

Gain/Loss: +11
New Total: 201

Larry Moss (171)

-Saying Renee’s name repeatedly during a phone call after he’s been told no one can know she’s alive -12
-Delivering a low blow to Jack -8
-Objecting to the plan -10
-Looking out for Renee +20
-Actually following the order not to tell anyone Renee is alive (unlike a lot of other people who ignore orders like that on this show) +10

Gain/Loss: 0
New Total: 171

Dubaku (83)

-Managing to play evil terrorist by day, sweet boyfriend by night (now that’s a multi-tasker!) +12
-Leaving the operation to go deal with his girlfriend’s sister -8
-Blackmailing President Taylor +12
-Hurting Henry -8 (what can I say? I like the First Gentleman)

Gain/Loss: +8
New Total: 91

Special Awards:

The Dumbest Move of the Week goes to: Rosa (the girlfriend’s sister) for telling Dubaku she knows he isn’t who he says he is and ordering him to break up with her sister. Yeah, that’s gonna get her real far. I’m also giving her the Most Likely to Jump into the Death Pool Award.

The Most Useless Award goes to: Who ever did the background check on Vossler. You’d think the Sangala connected would’ve raised a few red flags. Unless, of course, that person’s dirty, too.

The AMEN Award goes to: Janis for calling out Sean on his girlfriend.

  1. massimo from toronto Says:

I thought that Jack had two sweet kills in this episode.

Stabbing Vossler and sliding through the hall to kill Dubaku’s henchman. (+15)

I cheered after seeing each one of those.

  2. isaac Says:

In those sympathy points for Renee, are there a few for saying that she’s “going to get out of it…tomorrow?”

Also, here’s to Jack and Dubaku’s gun battle during dinner at Dubaku’s girlfriend’s place.

BTW, are we out of terrorist plots already? It’s not even dinnertime!

  3. Jamie Beckett Says:

Ya know, I never even considered that line in those points. What do you think that deserves?

A Jack/Dubaku fight over dinner would be unintentionally comical, I think. I wonder if it will get to that, though. I have a feeling her sister (and even her) are headed for a bad end before any other dinner plans get made.

It does seem they moved pretty fast in getting rid of the CIP device and moving on to another threat, huh? I guess that’s par for the 24 course.

  4. Tim Says:

I don’t think the dinner will go to plan.
There was a plate of food in this episode, which is a rare sight on 24. I think two plates of food in one season is a bit much for 24.

  5. Jamie Beckett Says:

Very true. I’m thinking the sister will be dead before his girlfriend gets back from work.

heh on the food thing. What I wanna know is, why hasn’t anyone demanded a bathroom break in all these years?

  6. Dylan Says:

Larry loses points for not wanting to threaten and possibly torture a completely innocent woman and her baby? What - the - HELL? He should have GAINED points for standing up to Jack “I don’t care about innocent people” Bauer. And Jack shouldn’t get points for that pathetic “Not today” reply. He’s turning more and more into an asshole this season but the fans don’t seem to care as long as he kills enough terrorists in “cool” ways.

JAMIE: I see what you’re saying and I do agree, to an extent. I gave the points off because it wasn’t Jack. I knew there is no way Renee would torture that baby or her mother. Still… I do see Jack’s point: the terrorists don’t play by rules. They play dirty and sometimes we need to play dirty as well if we’re going to get anything over them. It sucks and it’s wrong, but sometimes there is just nothing else you can do. I also think it’s clear that Larry hates Jack and is operating from a mind set where if Jack suggested playing with puppies and feeding hungry children at the local shelter, Larry would argue it’s wrong somehow just to argue with Jack. His feelings for Renee seem to be ruling him quite a bit this season.

As for Jack- I agree he’s a bit different this year and I’m kind of enjoying it. I think we’re seeing a broken person who has shut down pretty much all of his emotions because it’s the only way to keep from completely losing it. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be working either, because he seems to be getting worse as the day goes on. I’m curious to see if he ends up changing at all after the day is said and done due to Renee’s influence.
